Baltimore Riot Picture- Miscellaneous Post

This picture of the 2015 Baltimore City riots capture a group of young African American men destroying a police car.  The riot was a response to the death of Freddie Gray, a young black man from Baltimore who died while in police custody.  Although much has changed since the Watts riots of 1965, this picture clearly demonstrates that police brutality remains enough of an issue to illicit the same response 50 years later.  While our picture from the black lives matter protest from present day shows a much more peaceful response to police violence, the Baltimore riots show that violent protests and riots can still occur today.  In this picture, the fact that the object being destroyed is a police car sends a clear message.  Our image from the Watts riots simply showed two men stealing lamps among the chaos, whereas the destruction of the police car very obviously represents the purpose of the protests.  In this sense, the present day picture incorporates logos much more effectively, as the importance of the image can be seen without needing the full context.

  1. The destruction of the police car sends a very powerful message of the riots. Violent protests like this usually stem from a feeling of frustration towards a specific problem, but the execution is almost never as specific and deliberate as this one was.

  2. I think this was a much better image choice for violent protests than your groups original choice. This is because of the same reason that you pointed out that you can actually tell whats going on without any context so good job.

  3. I like how you brought in the fact that the Baltimore Riots picture incorporates a stronger logos than the Watts Riots, something I hadn't thought about. However, I do not believe that the Baltimore riots itself was any more purposeful than the Watts riot, even though the picture of the two might portray the opposite.

  4. I liked your choice for the miscellaneous post, as it is so easily connected to the image from the Watts Riots. It really illustrates how similar the present is to the past, and how we are still far from achieving our goal, that being an America that has no need to riot.
