Stasis

When studying the message behind an image, stasis theory is an effective way to quickly break down the most important information into a simple argument. The main stasis used in our present day image of the woman at the black lives matter protest is cause and effect.  The many deaths of young black men at the hands of the police caused protests, riots, and widespread fear in African Americans across the country.  This woman had to question whether or not she would be the next victim of police violence.  In 2015, zero cops were convicted of murder, despite the hundreds of people who were killed by the police.  Black people across the country were calling for justice, and accountability for police officers.  The black lives matter movement has been one of the largest social justice movements since the civil rights movement in the 1960’s.

  1. I agree that stasis theory used was cause and effect, but I also think evaluation was used because the value of the female holding the sign life was questioned by her asking am I next. It's like individuals lives are not took into consideration.

  2. I agree with you, that the stasis theory present in the image is cause and effect. The woman in the picture is emphasizing how many before her have been discriminated against based on race (and most likely also gender). This image may also be interpreted as a call to action, to end discrimination, end the cycle of prejudice in parts of the United States and around the world.

  3. There is definitely an element of cause and effect in this piece as the woman's safety is currently under questions as a result of certain police actions in her community, but I think ultimately there is more a stasis of action since she is posing the question rhetorically and therefore asking the police force/government to rethink their policies and practices.

  4. I think a lot of the facts that you point out in your post are very related to the problems we are having currently. It surprises me that these problems have been happening for years and haven't changed.

  5. I agree with your analysis that the stasis used is cause and effect. Those protesting are not doing so for no reason, they were prompted to do it by the horrific events that took place.
